For years I’ve been trying to learn to be present.
I realised a while ago that the key was to stop thinking, but I could only do it for moments.
The mind is wired for survival. It is either in the future, anticipating and planning for better, or in the past, regretting and learning from what has come before.
Lately I realised, if the mind is wired for survival, it will always keep itself busy; inventing problems for the future or conjuring up regrets from the past, neither of which are reality, and we can’t be present.
Unless…
We let go of the need to think, which means we must let go of the will to survive, and we must accept that we will either survive, or we won’t.
And that’s for God to worry about.
The key to being present is to let go of control and to give it to God.
