Reasoning from a foundation of competence…

I like to do breathwork meditations while lying down in the sauna.

The other day, my trainer was telling me it was dangerous because you could pass out.

“A healthy person can’t pass out lying down,” I told him.

I’m a doctor. We learned this at medical school.

He went on to tell me about his friend who ‘passed out while lying down doing breathwork in a sauna.’

As a result, he wasn’t doing it.

“Can’t happen,” I told him.

He later asked his friend, and it turns out his friend passed out in the sauna when he stood up quickly.

This demonstrates that it can be hard to apply effective critical thinking without a foundation of understanding.

Covid, vaccines, diets, exercise etc.

Sometimes, we’re better to pick the expert we trust rather than bumble along reasoning from ignorance.
