“Don’t sweat the small stuff…”

We’ve all heard this saying, and it makes sense.

But it occurred to me the other day that “small” is relative.

A simplistic example…

If someone is living paycheck to paycheck, just managing to put enough food on their table to feed their kids, and something goes wrong that that would cost them $1,000, but with a bit of attention, they could address it. Then it’s worth “sweating.”

In the same example, if the person has significant material wealth, then $1,000 might be “small” so it’s not worth them “sweating.”

The insight for me was that we should constantly be recalibrating and testing what we are subconsciously calling “small,” and making sure it is appropriate for our stage of life.

Otherwise, we could find ourselves unnecessarily exposed or stressed.
